Salsa At Mullingar

About Us

The Club

The Salsa At Mullingar Club was formed in 2004 by Andre Dawkin. Its main aim is to provide an outlet where people can dance, make friends, get fit and generally have fun, in a friendly and relaxed environment. Finding a great venue to do this was not an easy task. When the Greville Arms Hotel in Mullingar became available, it met all the requirements, having a large solid dance floor, superb nite club sound system and great lighting. We are very proud to be able to offer people such a nice place to dance, right in the heart of Mullingar.

The Instructor

Andre Dawkin (Club founder and senior dance instructor)

Originally from Kent in the UK, Andre moved to Ireland in 2000. Having a passion for latin dance, he looked for somewhere he could dance regularly close to home. Not finding many latin dance clubs in Ireland; he decided to create one. In December 2004 'Salsa At Mullingar' was born. A dance club where he taught, and still teaches, a selection of latin dances. In 2005 he hosted the clubs first salsa party, to great acclaim. From then on, he hosted parties on a regular bases, often arranging international guest instructors and performers.
He first started dance training under Anthony Auffret the senior instructor of Salsa Nation. Very quickly becoming hooked on dance; he began going to as many Salsa and Latin dance classes / events as he could, travelling as far as Cuba and the Dominican Republic. By 2004 he had increased his dance knowledge to include other latin dances such as: Bachata, Rueda, Cha Cha Cha and Merengue. Believing one can never run out of things to learn, Andre continues his training to this day and is almost certain to be found at every major salsa event in Ireland.
His other achievements include instructing and DJ-ing in Greece and Antigua for the Ski & Rock holiday company and opening a second club in his current home town of Carrick-on-Shannon. Both clubs are still going strong and have helped build a strong dance community in the midlands and north west of Ireland.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a partner?
No - We cycle through partners every few minutes so that both advanced and beginner dancers can learn from each other. We find that this is better for everyone, as people learn more quickly and it makes the evening much more social.

What should I wear?
Salsa is an energetic form of dance, so your clothes should be light and comfortable. Shoes should be light, flexible and spin easily on a wooden dance floor. The Dance Shop Mullingar
Ladies: Jeans, trousers, leggings, skirts or dresses with tops or bodies.
Gents: Jeans, trousers with shirt or T-shirt.

For professional dance wear check out  www.DanceShopMullingar.com

How much is a class?
We charge 10 euro per person for a full evening. This includes two and a half hours of lessons and another two hours of social dancing; So take advantage of it !!  (come early, stay late). You can come or leave at any point during the night but the longer you stay the more you will learn.

What's the age range of the people in your club?
We attract a complete mixture of people from their late teens through to retirement. All ages are welcome.

Where do you teach?
We teach in both Mullingar Co.Westmeath and Carrick-on-Shannon Co. Leitrim.
Click here for directions to our top class venues.

What types of dance do you teach?
We primarily teach LA style Salsa but we also include Bachata, Rueda, Cha Cha Cha and Merengue in our improvers classes.

Is parking easily available?
Yes, both clubs have public car parks nearby. You can park to the rear of the Greville Arms Hotel in Mullingar. To access this parking lot; drive to the end of Church Ave. (the street to the left of the hotel and beside McDonalds) and take a right in through the large double gates. Please note: You will need to press the triangular shaped button on the control panel next to your drivers window to open the gates.

When should I start?
As soon as possible! Why wait? ;) All our classes work on a 'Drop-in' system. With beginner, intermediate and advanced classes on every night (that we teach), no matter what level you are, you can drop in and we will be happy to teach you. Note: Some of our advanced classes carry through from one week to the next so if you come regularly you will benefit more and find the classes easier.

How long does it take to become a great dancer?
This really depends on the individual. Dance is an ever growing art, so there is always more you can learn and ways you can improve. On average; for a lady who is an absolute beginner, it takes about 6 classes to get a feel for Salsa and really start to enjoy it. For a man, it can take twice as long, as he must lead the dance and remember all of the moves and combos. But don't let this put you off; as during the whole process you will be having fun, making lots of friends and getting really fit. And, with regular attendance, it will seem like no time at all before you Are a great dancer!

Still unsure? Then check out our party photos. We host Salsa Party Nights on a regular bases; They're a lot of fun, and a great way to meet people and try out your dancing skills ;). But we're not the only ones! There's a whole community of Salsa dancers in Ireland, with events and classes happening all over the country. Don't believe us? Then go to Salsa.ie, it's the forum for the Irish Salsa world and includes all the class - event listings. If we're too far from you, then why not find out who the local instructor in your area is!
So long as you're dancing, we're happy.

"Looking forward to meeting you on the dance floor."
